Front Street, Beaufort, North Carolina

Steamed shrimp and Core Sound oysters, straight off the boat

Dwayne Lassiter is the third generation of his family to fish these waters, and the shed on Front Street is where his catch lands. What comes off the boat is what we steam, shuck and fry that day.

About the shed

Three generations of Lassiters on the water

Dwayne Lassiter is a third-generation fisherman, and the shed on Front Street is where his catch lands. Kendra, his daughter, runs the counter and the steam pot, and keeps the picnic tables on the dock in order.

Shrimp come in by the pound and go into the pot seasoned. Oysters from Core Sound are shucked to order, or roasted over the fire when the evenings cool off. Soft-shell crabs go into a sandwich, flounder goes on a plate with hushpuppies, and there is clam chowder on the stove all day.

There is cold beer and sweet tea, and you eat at a picnic table with the boats right there. We take walk-ins only for small tables, so if you are bringing a crowd, call ahead.

What people say about the shed

Marcia T. of Beaufort, standing on the dock

We came off the water at five, walked up Front Street and ate shrimp off a paper plate on the dock until the light went. Nobody hurried us along, and the oysters were the best we had all summer.
